Detailed 10-Day Itinerary

Day 1
Arrival in Guiyang
Arrive in Guiyang, the capital of Guizhou Province.
Your private guide will meet you at the airport or railway station and transfer you to your hotel by private vehicle. The rest of the day is free for you to settle in and prepare for the journey ahead.
The original itinerary also offers an optional half-day introduction to Guiyang for travelers arriving before noon, combining local history, different architectural styles, and a chance to sample classic local snacks.
Day 2
Guiyang — Huangguoshu Waterfall & Tianlong Village
Leave Guiyang for Huangguoshu Waterfall, one of the signature natural sights of Guizhou.
Huangguoshu Waterfall
Stand before the vast silver cascade dropping from a cliff roughly 20 stories high.
Rather than viewing it only from a distance, walk through the Water-Curtain Cave, located behind the waterfall, and experience the sound, mist, and power of the water at close range. On sunny days, rainbows may appear in the spray.
Tianlong Village
Continue into the karst countryside and visit Tianlong Village, originally established about 600 years ago for military purposes.
Explore its distinctive stone-built environment, including stone foundations, walls, roofs, watchtowers, and narrow lanes that preserve the character of the original settlement.
Ground Opera
Sit down for a performance of traditional Ground Opera, a distinctive local folk drama used by villagers to preserve and retell their history.
Day 3
Miao Villages — Ancient Handmade Paper Experience
Today begins a deeper exploration of Guizhou's ethnic minority communities.
Traditional Handmade Paper Village
Travel into a Miao village where residents still preserve an old method of producing paper from wood pulp.
Meet an inheritor of the craft and learn the process step by step. Under the guidance of an experienced paper maker, create your own handmade paper craft using traditional methods.
Farmer's Home Lunch
Enjoy lunch in a local farmer's home, prepared with fresh ingredients from the surrounding area.
Traditional Miao Village
Continue to a small, relatively untouched village known for its distinctive dustpan-shaped layout.
Walk along bluestone paths and observe local homes and daily routines for a closer look at rural minority life.
Day 4
Southeast Guizhou — Batik Making & Mini-Skirted Miao Village
Today introduces two very different Miao communities.
Traditional Batik Village
Visit a village whose traditional clothing reflects an unusual historical connection with military culture.
The community is also known for its ancient batik craftsmanship, with dyed fabrics traditionally displayed at doorways in place of conventional paper couplets.
Enter a local dye house to observe the process and take part in creating batik yourself.
Mini-Skirted Miao Village
After lunch, continue to another Miao village renowned for the colorful short skirts traditionally worn by local women.
Learn about the community's distinctive customs as well as its centuries-old creative techniques for food storage.
Day 5
Wuyang River Gorge Cruise & Zhenyuan Ancient Town
Today combines natural scenery with one of Guizhou's most atmospheric historic towns.
Wuyang River Gorge
Travel to the Wuyang River on the outskirts of Zhenyuan County.
Board a boat and cruise through clear green water surrounded by unusual mountain peaks and picturesque gorge scenery. Watch the formations change as the boat moves deeper into the landscape.
Zhenyuan Ancient Town
Continue to Zhenyuan Ancient Town, spread across both banks of a horseshoe-shaped river.
Its riverside main street resembles other Chinese ancient towns, but the four old alleys farther from the water preserve a more intimate maze of Ming-era architecture. At night, red lanterns add to the historic atmosphere.
Ancient Religious Complex
Across the river, explore a vertical complex of temples, caves, and grottoes representing Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism.
Climb higher for a panoramic view over the town and surrounding river.
Day 6
Fanjing Mountain Hiking
Today is dedicated to Fanjing Mountain, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2018 and regarded as an important Buddhist sacred mountain.
Old Golden Summit
Explore the Old Golden Summit, rising to approximately 2,494 meters and home to the mountain's famous Mushroom Rock formation.
Red Golden Summit
Continue toward the dramatic Red Golden Summit, approximately 2,336 meters high.
Its summit is divided into two separate peaks, linked by a bridge across the narrow gap, creating one of Fanjing Mountain's most recognizable landscapes.
Mountain Wildlife & Nature
Hike through this protected ecosystem, home to diverse plant and animal species. Rare wildlife may occasionally be spotted along the way.
Day 7
Fanjing Mountain Area → Fenghuang Ancient Town
Fenghuang Ancient Town
Slow the pace and explore Fenghuang on foot.
Walk through riverside lanes, browse small shops, visit traditional homes, and seek out the quieter corners of the old town. Local minority handicrafts are an important part of the cultural character of this region.
Fenghuang at Night
Stay into the evening, when the town becomes calmer and more atmospheric.
Find a riverside spot, watch the sunset, and enjoy Fenghuang after the daytime crowds begin to disappear.
Day 8
Fenghuang → Zhangjiajie — Red Stone Forest, Tianzi Mountain & Yuanjiajie
Start early for the journey from Fenghuang toward Zhangjiajie. The full drive is around five hours, but the route includes an additional scenic stop.
Red Stone Forest National Geopark
Stop at Red Stone Forest National Geopark, known for its unusual formations and striking rock shapes.
Explore this distinctive geological landscape before continuing to Zhangjiajie.
Tianzi Mountain
Enter Zhangjiajie National Forest Park in the Wulingyuan Scenic Area.
Take the cable car up Tianzi Mountain and look down through the glass walkway toward the sharp sandstone peaks rising from the forest below.
Yuanjiajie Scenic Area
After lunch on the mountain, continue to Yuanjiajie, one of Zhangjiajie's most famous scenic areas.
Its towering sandstone pillars provided inspiration for the Hallelujah Mountains seen in Avatar.
Day 9
Zhangjiajie — Baofeng Lake & Tianmen Mountain
Spend your final full day enjoying two very different Zhangjiajie landscapes.
Baofeng Lake
Begin at Baofeng Lake, hidden among the surrounding mountains.
Take a relaxing boat journey across the clear water while admiring hills of different shapes. Along the way, local ethnic minority performers sing traditional songs, adding a cultural element to the peaceful scenery.
Tianmen Mountain
Continue to Tianmen Mountain, often described as the “soul” of Zhangjiajie and the highest mountain in the area.
Its scenery ranges from ancient trees and karst hills to spectacular roads carved into the cliffs.
Experience the mountain's famous cableway, the cliffside glass walkway approximately 1,430 meters above the ground, and views over the winding 99 Bends mountain road.
Day 10
Departure from Zhangjiajie
Your guide will meet you at the hotel and provide a private transfer to Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport.
Assistance with airport check-in is included, bringing your 10-day Guizhou and Zhangjiajie journey to an end.
